2010 Continue fitting out

After crossing the North Sea from Hull to Dunkerque in 2008 and then cruising for 18 months, we have started fitting out the last big section of Waterdog. There is plenty to do as we not only have to build the new galley, lounge and bedroom but we have to rip out the existing temporary galley (and floor) and replace it with a new lounge. The complication being that we live in the boat while building it. We don't really want to move out to fit it out, but it would be easier in some ways. There is an old transverse bulkhead between this new area being fitted out and the present temporary lounge/galley, which will have to be ripped out. Also about 1m of hull all around that which needs wire brushing, priming and insulating before we can finish the panelling. This bulkhead presently divides our living quarters from the empty space at the back. |

We started with securing treated joists to the painted boats ribs and then vacuuming under all the ballast by shifting it out of the way. We used 6”x2” joists in the forward section of the boat but there is less height below the wheelhouse at the stern so we have reduced this to 4”x 2” to improve headroom. Oak planks were delivered by lorry from a timber yard near Binche together with some 5.5mm plywood that will eventually be used for the ceiling but in the meantime will be used to protect the floor. |

We are insulating the new floor with double layered silver foil. Our forward floor has always been very cold in the winter so this should help. The insulation was stapled to the joists to hold it in place. The empty square is for the aft inspection hatch. |

Starting at the new back bulkhead to the new battery room we tried to get the planks to be straight across the boat and squeezed them up tight. Each plank is screwed down with 2” brass screws in a varied pattern. It is nice to work with beautiful wood but hard on the knees. |

The floor is 20mm thick x 160mm wide rustic oak tongue and groove, we think it is beautiful. There will be a hatch in the floor towards the back for access to the bilge and two more under the galley for storage. The left of this picture (Starboard side) will be a workshop so will be floored in cheaper plywood. |
